The human body is 60% water. Given how much of it there is in the body, it makes sense that you can’t survive long without it. The best way to consume water is to drink it. Water does more than just keep you alive. When you drink water, there are a whole host of benefits you can enjoy.

Your skin contains about 30% water. The skin’s water content is responsible for its resilience and plump appearance. Drinking plenty of water provides your skin with an ample water supply, a critical step in keeping it looking youthful and healthy. It’s important to understand that the water you drink isn’t going to be sent directly to your skin. Hydration has more of an indirect benefit for the skin. Once the water you drink is absorbed by the bloodstream and filtered by the kidneys, it’s distributed to cells all over your body to hydrate them (including your skin cells).

Did you know that being hydrated can help you feel better mentally? There are a few reasons for this. First, being hydrated means you won’t suffer symptoms brought on by dehydration. Dehydration can cause feelings of fatigue and impair concentration, alertness, and short-term memory. Such symptoms can trigger headaches as well. All that can lead to a lousy mental state, something that hydration can help with. Second, hydration throughout the day could help you sleep better at night. Drinking water throughout the day instead of chugging it before bed will reduce your need to get up at night to use the bathroom. It can also help regulate your body temperature and minimize night-time muscle cramps.

It’s so much easier to live your best life when you’re healthier. Drinking enough water helps keep your kidneys healthy, flush toxins and waste from your body efficiently, make vitamins and minerals more available for absorption and help you perform at your peak during physical activities. All of that adds up to living a healthier, better life.

Recommendations for how much water to drink range from 8 cups a day to 2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men. Of course, you don’t have to get your water intake solely by drinking it. Eat plenty of water-rich fruits and vegetables to boost your water intake with what you eat. If you combine that with drinking plenty of water throughout the day, you’ll be well on your way to proper hydration.
